A ceramic manufacturer first established in an old convent in 1798 on the French, Luxembourg and Belgian borders and visited by the Emperor Napoleon who ordered a table service for the Maison Impériales de la Légion d'Honneur, it was taken over by the d'Huart family in 1835 and remained in their hands for 140 years. At the time ceramics from China and Japan were being imported into France and the firm responded by introducing a new style which was called Emaux de Longwy. The Italian Amédée de Carenza introduced this new technique of enamelling in the cloisonné style.to the workshop in 1872. The work of Longwy is distinguished by the vividness of its colouring and the variety of its decoration with inspiration from China, Japan, Persia, Turkey and Egypt. (The British Museum)
